Steve Morgan, a Professor in the School of Population and Public Health has been appointed Director of the UBC Centre for Health Services and Policy Research (CHSPR).
Dr. Morgan, who has served as Associate Director at CHSPR since 2008 will begin his post on January 1, 2014

Dr. Morgan’s research is focused on health care policy, with an emphasis on health care financing and expenditures, equity analysis, and pharmaceutical policies. He has published over 150 articles, book chapters, and reports, and has served as a policy consultant to governments in Canada and abroad. He writes regular editorials in major newspapers and can be followed on Twitter at @SteveUBC.
CHSPR was launched in 1990 under the leadership of Dr. Morris Barer to act as an independent and interdisciplinary research and training centre. The Centre played a leadership role in developing and hosting collections of health care, health services and population health data – an initiative that has now become Population Data BC.
“It is a true honour to be appointed director of CHSPR, an organization with a global reputation for conducting research of high scientific calibre and clear public interest. Our team of faculty, staff and trainees is positioned to go from strength to strength as we plan our next chapter,” said Dr. Morgan.
Dr. Charlyn Black served as Director of CHSPR from 2002 to 2007, and as Acting Director for 2013.
“Dr. Barer and I are both elated that someone of Dr. Morgan’s stature has committed to leading CHSPR into the future. The organization will be in excellent hands,” said Dr. Black.
CHSPR’s research focuses on population-level analyses of the health care system. It is home to some of Canada’s leading experts in the analysis of linked health care databases, health human resources, primary health care systems, healthcare funding, and pharmaceutical policy. The Centre has built strong collaborative partnerships with research organizations in British Columbia, across Canada, and around the world.
As Director, Dr. Morgan will guide CHSPR as it continues to advance its research, training and knowledge translation activities on issues that matter to Canadians.
